"Juggling is a good word for that…If that tells you anything."

Zoomster questions by Debbie:

NASCAR Winston Cup racing today requires juggling many elements, including the driver, sponsor, crew, car, equipment and more...have you developed a strategy over the years to help you? (

Laughs) "Juggling is a good word for that! Years past the crew chief had to do the majority of what was going on...even so much as getting rooms, plane tickets, travel...not even talking about the race car itself. Now, just the crew chief job itself takes about three people...because there's so much involved in it. You just have to divide things up. I try to keep up with all of the travel, the scheduling of tests and wind tunnel stuff. Len keeps up with all of the motor stuff with Jack and his crowd. Pat keeps up with the race car. My sister Kim does all of the business things as far as booking tickets, rooms and all. It is a pain. That's a light way of putting it. You'll have your schedule in line to at a certain time with a certain group going to a certain place. Five minutes later, it changes…even something as simple as when you leave to go to the race track every week. It's never known until the day you leave when you're leaving. We've got a list of where your staying, when you're leaving, whose in what room, whose flying private or commercial...this and that schedule is posted Monday before the following race weekend, and by Thursday, by the time we are going to leave it will have eight to ten updates...if that tells you anything."

How do you get the most from your team members?

"Each team member knows what he has to do. He's responsible for his little piece of this world. We try to give them time off because the schedule is so rough, especially the road guys. When they get the job done, we try to get them to take some time off whether it's a half day or a day...whatever can be done. You try to squeeze test and stuff in with racing stuff.. It makes it pretty tough."
