“Something allows me to just pull something out of myself that I can’t do any other time.”

A Zoomster question from Gary Larsen:

Good drivers have skills, experience and good eyes. I’m speaking of the vision of what you see going around and absorbing the race action as it’s going on. What’s inside you that is not in most?

Jeff Gordon

“You’d be surprised at my vision. I’m 20/20 when I have both eyes open. I can’t say that having great eyes has always been in my background. I don’t wear glasses, but I wouldn’t say that I have perfect vision.”

“I do think there are certain skills that come naturally and there are some that do have to be taught, that you learn. I’ve been driving a racecar since I was five and a half years old with my stepfather really teaching me a lot of things to pay attention to. I was fortunate. I was a sponge soaking a lot of it in at a young age.

Not all of it came naturally, but the competition side did. When I got out there in a car when I was competing against the other cars…something allows me to just pull something out of myself that I can’t do any other time. What comes along with that is not just the focus, but the intensity level, the aggressiveness, the patience and like you said the vision to know what’s around you. What it’s going to take to go faster than the car in front of you. What it’s going to take to keep those guys behind you.”

“I’ve always said I’ve been driving a racecar for so long that I don’t know anything else. I was fortunate to have a great person to help me along the way to become the racecar driver that I am.
